Acquisition of Photonic Doppler Velocimeter for Defense-Related Dynamic Compression Studies
Abstract
Acquisition of Photonic Doppler Velocimeter for Defense-Related Dynamic Compression Studies Project Summary The ONR 332-supported experimental program in the Caltech shock wave lab requires newequipment purchases to upgrade our diagnostic, operational, and safety capabilities. Thisproposal requests funds for three equipment items to support high-precision equation of state andsound-speed determinations for defense-related research. Specifically, we request:(1) A state-of-the-art four-channel photonic Doppler velocimeter (PDV)(2) A ???personal??? CNC mini-mill for in-house high-precision machining(3) A nondestructive ultrasonic thickness gauge for inspection.ONR 332 has funded our laboratory to study high-pressure and high strain rate failure of soda lime glass for penetration-resistance applications. To extend these measurements to much higher pressures than previously achieved, we will carry out a campaign of normal-impact experiments on our high-performance guns with streak camera and PDV diagnostics. Our Hugoniot andisentropic equation of state, sound speed, and wave-profile information will support pressures hear results from other labs and verification and development of improved constitutive models.PDV, item (1), is the preferred diagnostic for these experiments, allowing monitoring of multiple points without velocity ambiguity. Currently we borrow, when available, a PDV whose configuration is non-optimal. Although these experiments use proven and conventional technology in novel configurations, items (2) and (3) are aimed at increasing the safety and efficiency of all our lab operations and preventing downtime through scheduled part replacement and preventive maintenance. The Caltech shock wave lab is a US university-based lab dedicated to studying material properties and the deep Earth. Our data are influential across a wide range of basic and applied disciplines in geophysics, materials science, and defense. We have trained many students and visitors who have gone on to establish experimental research programs around the world.
