Securing and Developing a Veteran STEM Center Within The University of Hawaii West Oahu STEM Center s Pueo Prototyping Lab
Abstract
Abstract:UHWO is a four-year, comprehensive university with an emphasis on career-related baccalaureate education based on state, regional, and global needs. Our ???military friendly??? campus is located closely to 12 key defense, military, and government facilities. With this proximity and understanding the needs of veteran students, UHWO, seeks to provide multiple pathways for them to successfullyenter STEM career pathways through the addition of a VET STEM Center within our Pueo Prototyping Lab. This will leverage existing facilities and programs at UHWO that currently focused on enhancement of the STEM workforce in Hawai???i. With support from the VET STEM Center, our veteran graduates will be in high demand for a variety of STEM and related fields including Facilities Management, Facilities Engineering; Science, Mathematics, and STEM Teaching; ForensicAnthropology and Archaeology; FEMA/HIEMA; civilian and military Police Forces; Crime Scene Investigation; Homeland Security; and Cyber Security and Information Assurance. Another pathway for our graduates, while not immediately into the workforce, is to continue to advance education in avariety of STEM related programs that will credential them for higher-level positions. For UHWO to successfully grow our STEM Programs, it is critical that we continue to build the associated supporting programs including focusing on our student veterans as we strengthen our current opportunities in general engineering, energy and sustainability, and general education courses.
