Science of Open Electrochemical Systems

Abstract

This proposal addresses a number of basic aspects of the Open Electrochemical Systems. Fundamental investigations of the membrane properties are still needed to allow conduction of ions that might be important to specific processes. These will be carried out using the array of techniques developed in our lab. Membranes, electrodes and electroactive materials all require development and bench testing for suitability to some applications. We will build on previous efforts in several ways, preparing and characterizing new membrane materials from a polymer scaffold, constructing new electrode structures with some interesting potential in energy storage and exploring new ways of using the RFB platform for continuous chemical conversion processes with high utilization.
