Engaging Military Veterans to Increase Engineering Enrollment and B/S, M/S, and PhD Degrees Awarded

Abstract

This proposal will attract US military veterans to graduate school inengineering and prepare them for a career in the naval STEM researchworkforce. The focus will be on the PhD program and we will attract theseveterans with a threepronged approach of 1). engaging them with hands-on laboratory experience,2). providing them with a dual academic/industrial research advisors, and3). providing financial tuition support. To help them consider the NavalSTEM research workforce, we will also expand our beneficial collaborationwith NavAir to include the Naval research laboratories. This is possible andreasonable because the PI has a track record of attracting US nationals tograduate school (including veterans), has the diverse laboratory, and with35 years of industrial experience, the support of many research partners. The tuition support leverages University "teaching assistantship" salariesand military health benefits to complete the financial needs of thesegraduate students and soften the financial burden of graduate school to makeit more attractive.
