Marine Bioacoustics: Applications in Mobile Ocean Observing Networks
Abstract
A three-year training program is proposed to continue the tradition of educating students from around the world in the fundamentals of marine bioacousticians. A primary goal of the program is to provide these students with a broad understanding of ocean acoustics as well as the technologies used to study the ecology of marine mammals in situ. By inviting expert researchers in marine bioacoustics, marine mammal biology, and biological oceanography, we will provide students with a unique opportunity to work side by side with leaders in the field of marine bioacoustics while using state-of-the-art technologies. The program also will provide a setting for developing and testing new instrumentation. In this manner, it will serve as a research magnet, enabling leading scientists to conduct their own research in a creative teaching and learning environment, one that catalyzes interactions across the various disciplines associated with marine bioacoustics.
