Abstract

Westerly Education Center, a division of the Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner, seeks capacity-building funding for the provision of educational services and workforce development on behalf of our largest defense client, General Dynamics Electric Boat as well as the increase of educational services and workforce opportunities for the defenseindustry and regional employers. Our performance goals are aligned with OPC:~ Workforce development: Increase the number of Rhode Islanders who are trained for high-demand, high-wage jobs aligned with Rhode Island~s industry-sector strategy~ Equity: Eliminate equity gaps and ensure that greater numbers of low income, women, and racial and ethnical minorities participate in programs at WEC.~ Attainment: Increase the number of Rhode Islanders with postsecondary degrees and credentials in order to reach a 70 percent attainment goal by 2025.As a successful applicant, WEC will pursue three objectives to realize our goals. First, we plan to increase our staffing to broaden staff capabilities in serving employers~ workforce development and recruitment needs. Second, we intend to develop new strategies for and conduct targeted outreach to communities underserved in workforce training and education opportunities. Third, improve our hands-on teaching lab with tools needed to serve career-bound students inWesterly. Together, these streams of activities will allow us to build stronger relationships with employers, educators, and communities around the WEC and in northern Rhode Island, where we will tap larger populations of graduating seniors, unemployed and underemployed U.S. citizens.
