Improving white matter in the human brain
Abstract
Our overall goal is to improve connectivity in any areas of the human brain in order to explore the possibility of assisting learning and memory and restoring function in cases of reduced white matter in stroke, concussion, addiction, aging and other disorders. In order to order to move toward this goal we propose to induce white matter change in pathways surrounding the anterior cingulate in a cohort of undergraduate smokers by 20 days of theta stimulation of the anterior cingulate from scalp electrodes. We will assay white matter by use of diffusion tensor imaging prior to and after the 20 days of theta stimulation.
