Evaluation of Tufts Lab-on-a-Pill

Abstract

The research will involve the testing of the Tufts University designed Lab-on-a-Pill device in pigs to determine functionality in a conscious animal whose gastrointestinal tract closely resembles that of humans. We will perform imaging to determine location and if the device responds to directed external commands to sample intestinal contents at precise locations within the intestinal tract. We will also retrieve the device following its expulsion from the animal as part of the fecal stream and determine if it has successfully stored regional sampled intestinal contents by sequencing the microbial contents and performing quantitation of neurochemical analytes present. Additionally, ex vivo functional analyses of the microbiota will be performed.
