Mooring Support for the Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment (CAATEX)

Abstract

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI, P.I. John Kemp) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO, Co-P.Is. Matt Dzieciu"ch and Peter Worcester) propose to conduct a joint U.S.-Norwegian acoustic propagation experiment across the entire Arctic basin to be called the Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment (CAATEX). This study consists of a year-long experiment in the Western Arctic Ocean during 2019~2020. The goal of the study is to understand long-outstanding acoustic issues, such as internal-wave-induced scattering and acoustic coherence, and in the application of acoustic methods to improve our understanding of the rapidly changing environment in the Arctic, including the heat balance, internal wave mixing, ice formation, and noise processes. WHOI will des"ign and fabricate the three moorings for the CAATEX.
