Research on HLA Typing to Support Military Contingency
Abstract
Research on HLA Typing to Support Military Contingency: objective of this grant is to develop the scientific, medical and technological advances requiredto support military contingencies caused by injury to the blood-forming system from toxic substances. The aim is to provide HLA matched hematopoietic progenitor cells for casualties from donors during a contingency response and support for hematopoietic progenitor cell donors from the Department of Defense. The research foci included in this proposal include: building the DoDdonor registry and refining the operation of the DoD Donor Center to cope with a contingency situation; enhancing methods to rapidly and accurately determine high resolution HLA assignments of newly recruited donors; expanding knowledge of HLA diversity and using this information to enhance the search for a matched donor; and pursuing research into genetic factors besides HLA that might impact the outcome of hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation.
