Shallow-Water Mud Acoustics.
Abstract
The goal of this proposal is to determine effects of distributions of key physical characteristics, including constituent type and" particle size, on geoacoustic properties of mixed~component, mud~like marine sediments. Quantitative physics~based models and formulas from siltsuspension theory, which specifies parameter dependencies of wave speeds and attenuations, will be analyzed and tested. Validation and refinement of the formulas will be continued using archival and Seabed Characterization Experiment 2017 data. Additional investigations and extensions of recently initiated, model~based inversions of Combustive Sound Source data from SBCEX17 will be performed. Manuscripts will be prepared for submission to refereed journals. This proposal supports an Ocean Acoustics PhD Trainee, and activities for her advanced raining are included. The performance period of the proposal is 01 Jan 2019 ~ 15 July 2019, and the Trainee will complete her PhD degree by the termination date. The research in this proposal is closely coordinated with extensions of research from a previous ONR grant (~Shallow~Water Mud Acoustics~, N000141512025, 01 Feb 15 ~ 31 Jan 18, PI Dr. William L. Siegmann), from a current ONR Traineeship (~Shallow Water Mud Acoustics~, N000141712128, 01 Jan 2017 ~ 31 Dec 2018, PI Dr. William L. Siegmann), and from another current ONR grant (~Acoustical Properties of Mud Sediments~, N000141812439, 01 May 18 ~ 30 Apr 21, PI Dr." Allan D. Pierce).
