Harnessing Mechanistic Understanding to Inform Fracture Mechanics Based Modeling of Corroded Airframe Structural Components

Abstract

This work aims to address several remaining knowledge gaps to refine and validate the CMFA approach to enable engineering implementation. First, this work will extend the CMFA approach to additional corrosion morphologies, material systems, spectrum loading conditions, loading environments, and more complex component geometries. Second, analysis will be performed to determine the sensitivity of the CMFA accuracy to errors in growth rate inputs, loading spectrum inputs, and stress intensity solution accuracy. Finally, an analysis protocol for producing corrosion damage sensitivity maps (or other engineering relevant data) for engineering components will be developed, executed and validated to identify additionally remaining technical challenges.
