Creating a Coastal Carolina Cyber Workforce Education and Awareness Pipeline for National Security (C4WEAPNS)

Abstract

There is a well-documented gap in the national supply and demand for a qualified cybersecurity workforce. This need is amplified in South Carolina, home of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWARSYSCEN) Atlantic in Charleston. The State~s cybersecurity sector has grown 134% in the last five years, well above the national growth rate of 91%. More than 2,300 cybersecurity jobs are unfilled statewide. SPAWARSYSCEN is particularlychallenged with filling and retaining personnel its highly technical and demanding cybersecurity workforce openings, while new hires must enter with the capacity to function in an increasingly complex information technology environment that requires even greater technical ability, flexibility, and response times. Increasing the number of graduates to fill these critical jobsrequires not only the recruitment of talented students, but also the creation of realistic training environments that provide practical verification of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) for the cybersecurity workplace.
