Large Scale Quality Assurance and Longevity Testing of High Torque Density Motor Insulation

Abstract

As the U.S Navy embraces the All Electric Ship platform where electrical power for bothpropulsion and service loads is provided through the integrated power system, there are rapidlygrowing demands for power/torque density and payload efficiency for marine propulsion andpower generation. A nanostructured insulation with significant improvements over state-of-theartmicaceous technology in both electrical and thermal performance has been developed withthe promise of revolutionizing the electrical insulation in the manufacturing of next-generationintegrated power system motors for military electric propulsion with significantly enhancedtorque density and payload efficiency. The main objectives of this project include the large scalequality assurance and longevity testing as well as further performance enhancement in torquedensity for marine electrical propulsion.
