Annual Scientific Meeting of EUBS - EUBS2019

Abstract

Annual Scientific Meeting of EUBS - EUBS2019The European Underwater Baromedical Society (EUBS) aims at advancing the field of diving medicine research by facilitating contacts between researchers and clinicians, by stimulating early stage researchers (ESRs) to submit new work to their peers and elders, and to provide discussion forums aimed at optimising the likely successful outcome of research in the field. It does so by ~ among other activities ~ organising yearly a scientific Annual Meeting, each year organised in a different ~member~ country. The practical organisation is handled by a ~local organiser~ while the Scientific Committee is steered by EUBS Executive Committee members. The 2019 meeting is conducted in close collaboration with and scientific scrutiny of the Israeli Society of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine, as well as the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, University of Tel Aviv, the University of the Negev, and the Israeli Naval Medicine Institute, whose representatives are members of the Scientific Committee. The ~main body~ of the meeting will be largely composed of presentations made by EUBS members (although it is not mandatory to be a EUBS member to submit) and invited lecturers. These are usually chosen in order to stimulate innovative thought and cross-domain scientific exchange, however, providing an expert review and historical perspective of a currently ~hot~ topic by a distinguished and esteemed senior scientist is another frequently chosen option, as the originality of research is highly dependent on prior knowledge.A number of ~workshops~ and discussion forums are scheduled, in order to divulge results of new or updated research in a specific field. Here again, initiatives are taken to promote young researchers to present their work. Over the past years, considerable attention has been given to both technical advances in diving medicine areas (remote monitoring of physiologic parameters during diving, development of O2 and CO2 sensors for use in rebreathing apparatus, advanced data display options such as Head Up Displays and ~smart glasses~); and the biochemical and biophysical pre-conditioning of divers in order to reduce decompression stress. Scientific research contributions fromEUBS members are regularly published in the leading diving-medicine oriented journals. The full scientific programme will be composed after reception and peer-review of all abstracts submitted to the Scientific Committee, and will thus not be available before July 1st. In previous years, up to one third of the oral and poster presentations were delivered by young researchers; up to half of them developed new or innovative aspects of a given problem or research question. At this stage, the number of Keynote Speakers and their names have not yet been fixed; however, a session on ~ Hyperbaric Oxygen and Neuroscience ~ will be chaired by Professor Shai Efrati, Director of The Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research in Tel Aviv, Israel, focusing on Traumatic Brain Injury, Post-Concussion Syndrome, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, other neurological disorders, neuroimaging and the role of HBO in treating these disorders; another session will be dedicated to neurological and pulmonary (and other forms of) oxygen toxicity, both in HBOT and in diving (with emphasis on technical diving); a third session will focus on the effects of HBOT on stem cell function, mitochondrial function and the immune system. Other sessions may be constituted based on the abstracts received, and appropriate keynotespeakers will be selected for those. The EUBS meeting also provides an opportunity for diving and hyperbaric relatedmedical and scientific organisations to hold workshops and meetings in immediate connection to this meeting. This ensures wide distribution of advancing knowledge and permits planning of future research projects. In response to a demand from ONR, the planned workshop on oxyg
