COMBINED ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY (EEG) AND ELECTROCORTICOGRAPHY (ECOG) SYSTEM FOR BRAIN SIGNAL ANALYSIS
Abstract
COMBINED ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY (EEG) AND ELECTROCORTICOGRAPHY (ECOG) SYSTEM FOR BRAIN SIGNAL ANALYSIS - The purpose of this DURIP proposal is to acquire an EEG and ECoG (iEEG) system. The PI and co-PI have been collaboratively conducting research to enhance the signal processing capabilities of an EEG system so that such system can be used to detect action potential at the neuron level. It is known that neurons inside brain communicate with each other by means of a combination of electrical and chemical processes. This combined electrochemical activity allows neurons to transmit series of electrical pulses known as action potential from its cell body end to the synaptic terminals. Depending on the number of pulses synaptic terminals receive, specific typesof courier agents called neurotransmitters are deployed from the synaptic terminals to carry appropriate information to the adjacent cell body end. The entire process can enable one neuron to transmit information to thousands of neurons within millisecond time frame. If action potential does not transmit along the length of an axon, then neurotransmitters are not activated. It isknown that action potential transmission can be hampered due to brain injury. Any device that can measure local action potential by a non-invasive manner can provide vital information about the brain health of an injured soldier. As such, the DURIP proposal proposed here has direct relevance to ONR~s Basic Biomedical program.
