Scientific grand challenges and new perspectives in applied mathematics: Ocean, atmospheric and climate sciences - A conference in honour of Professor Andrew J. Majda s 70th birthday
Abstract
The proposed conference, on ""Scientific grand challenges and new perspectives in applied mathematics: Ocean, Atmospheric and Climate"" Sciences"" will be organized in honour of Prof. Majda s 70th birthday.The goal of this conference is to bring together some outsta"nding mathematicians and scientists who have contributed to this fields of research during the last 10 to 20 years, including people who were Prof. Majda s close collaborators, as well as those who were directly or indirectly influenced by his work and those from whom he himself got inspired. This will allow us to celebrate some of Majda s scientific legacy in the most effective and honourable manner, namely, by providing an unequalable opportunity to exchange the latest findings in those important research areas in mathematical sciences and foster interactions among the next generation of scientists revolving around these lines of research with scientists and mathematicians from the University of Victoria and the Pacific North West region.The conference will help build stronger links and interaction between various scientific international communities with the University of Victoria, the Ocean Networks Canada and the Pacific Impacts Consortium, PIMS, the Pacific Northwest scientific community, and the US scientific community, by taking advantages of the international notoriety of Professor Majda s engagements in these research areas.The conference will cover the following scientific topics with applications to atmosphere ocean and climate sciences:~ Data Assimilation (big data),~ Subgrid Parametrizations,~ Prediction,~ Uncertainty Quantification in Complex Systems,~ Turbulence,~ Models of Cloud formation,~ Climate models
