Collaborative Research: Seismo-Acoustic Detection, Localization and Characterization off Ice-Mechanical Events in Arctic Sea Ice

Abstract

Woods Hole Oceonographic Institution will work with MIT and other SIDEX partners on the monitoring and characterization of ice-mechanical events in Arctic sea ice acoustic and seismic arrays deployed on or below the ice cover in concert with non-acoustic stress and strain sensors deployed by the partners. The emphasis of the WHOI effort will be the design and deployment of geophone and hydrophone arrays in Y1 and Y3 experiments and localization/characterization of cracking events based on that data. The emphasis of the MIT effort will be modelling for design of array placement and array processing for event localization.
