XASEM for Surface Chemical Imaging Approaching Atomic-Scale Precision

Abstract

XASEM for Surface Chemical Imaging Approaching Atomic-Scale Precision This project proposes to directly address Navy~s R&D Priority of Operational Endurance by developing a novel instrument that is capable of investigating the structure and chemistry of high-performance materials approaching atomic-scale precision. Such an instrument is critical to understand, control and protect such materials that are at the heart of high-endurance naval operations, including corrosion as well as energy storage, conversion, and efficient use. As a start, this instrument will be a key enabler for a project under ONR~s HITES (High Temperature Energy Systems) program under Code 33 that focuses onusing a new class of materials called entropy stabilized oxides (ESOs) to create unprecedented capability in a variety of energy applications.
