2019 Coastal Ocean Dynamics Conference & Seminar

Abstract

We request funding from ONR as a partial contribution toward attendee costs for the combined Gordon Research Conference (GRC) and Gordon Research Seminars on Coastal Ocean Dynamics, to be held at Southern New Hampshire University, Manchester, NH, June 16-21(GRC), and Jun 15-16 (GRS), 2019. Some highlights of the 2019 Coastal Dynamics GRC are a strong program focused on coastal ocean physics featuring both establish and upcoming scientists, a new session on ocean-derived alternative energy sources, and an emphasis on mento"ring throughout the meeting via structured time at the GRS and a GRC """"Power Hour"""" discussion of women~s careers in Physical Oceano"graphy. Funding is instrumental in helping achieve the strongest possible scientific program by alleviating the need for invited speakers to weigh the financial cost of attendance while they consider an invitation to speak. Furthermore, funds would also be used to expand the demographic, professional and geographic diversity of meeting participants by supporting attendance by under-represented and under-resourced groups who stand to benefit from the intellectual environment, and networking opportunities, of the Gordon Research Conference and Seminar formats. Coastal seas are undeniably important for humans throughout the world: We are pleased the GRC so readily recognizes the visibility of our field that they chose a NASA photo we submitted representing the theme of our conference to advertise the GRCs in the journal Science.
