14th International Naturalistic Decision Making Conference, June 2019

Abstract

ShadowBox, LLC proposes to provide the 14th International Conference on Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) and is requesting the Office of Naval Research~s sponsorship of this event. This is not a research project. The conference will be held June 17 ~ 21, 2019 in San Francisco California, USA..NDM-14 will include keynote talks by invited speakers as well as paper and poster sessions. The call for papers and posters has been posted already. Additionally, there is a doctoral dissertation day planned, during which PhD students who apply (and are accepted) will present their research plans to, and receive feedback from, a panel of senior researchers. After the conference, submissions will be invited for a special issue of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making that will be related to Naturalistic Decision Making.ShadowBox~s approach is to organize a meeting that brings together a broad range of speakers conducting research studying decision making under stress, developing models of decision making, and creating methods for studying decision making in complex environments. Sponsorship funds will be used to support conference expenses such as invited speaker travel and registration fees, proceedings production, and conference programs. This conference will impact DoD activities by promoting the study of decision making in complex environments, cultivating multidisciplinary cross fertilization, and encouraging insights resulting from the exploration of decision making across domains. Military decision making represents an important domain of study for NDM researchers. Findings from NDM research inform strategies for supporting military personnel in making decisions under time pressure andwith significant risk, including improved decision support technologies, training, and organizational design. Research to better understand how to support human performance under these conditions, and the resulting applications, support the ONR mission to develop tools that provide the Navy with a battlefield advantage.
