Contribution to Conference: The 29th International Photochemistry Conference
Abstract
Although the International Conference on Photochemistry was co-initiated in the United States in 1962, it will be 20 years since the last United States event back in 1999 when it was held in Durham, NC. The event has occurred in all major regions of the world, with the exception of Africa. The conference attendance is in the range of 500-700 attendees who attend a number of different symposia that run throughout the 4 days of the conference. This year there are 9 sessions, which is one more than Strasbourg, but allows for a session on Atmospheric Photochemistry, which fits in with the strong atmospheric sciences prevalent in the Boulder area. The nine session are: 1. Fundamental Photochemistry & Photophysics 2. Inorganic Photochemistry 3. Ultrafast Photochemistry 4. Photochemical and Photoredox Processes 5. Spectroscopy at the Nanoscale 6. Photochemistry using nanostructures with enhanced optoelectronic properties 7. Solar Fuels: Natural and Artificial Photosynthesis 8. Device-Inspired Photochemistry and Photophysics 9. Atmospheric and Environmental Photochemistry Of these nine sessions, the first eight will have science that is of direct relevance to the Organic and Hybrid Photovoltaics program of ONR. These will focus on basic science and of course with an emphasis on photochemistry, but with the device-Inspired Photochemistry and Photophysics session (8) designed to overlap the ONR program directly. Each session is chaired by two people one of whom is local, from either NREL or CU-Boulder. The conference takes a great deal of effort to recognize diversity in appointing the session chairs and in choosing the invited and plenary speakers (listed below). In addition, the international aspects of the conference are respected by choosing speakers from across the globe.
