Acoustical oceanography of shelf break regions
Abstract
Over the past two decades the ocean science community has become increasingly interested in the ocean ~mesoscale~ eddy structure re"ferred to as the ocean weather. This phenomenon that is superimposed on a larger scale circulation referred to as the ocean climate, and has been the topic of interest by oceanographers in the arctic region during the last decade. It is desired to obtain a three-dimensional time dependent eddy structure particularly in the Chukchi shelf break where previous observations during the Marginal Ice Zone events have shown evidence of cyclic rotation of the upper water column dynamics attributed to eddy scales of dynamics. Traditional ship-based observations are not adequate for monitoring the ocean at mesoscale resolution, however, with the recent advancements in acoustic forward and inverse problems there is now an opportunity to conduct three-dimensional studies of these structures.Followed by a month-long pilot study in 2015, a yearlong experiment called Canada Basin Acoustic Propagation Experiment (CANAPE) was successfully conducted during 2016-2017. Result from this experiment that had both deep basin and shallow water (shelf region) components, show a path forward for an experiment to study the shelf break dynamics. This proposal addresses the instrumentation components of such study. Requested instrumentation in here provides tools to study eddy dynamics of the Chukchi shelf break region systemati"cally during the fast changing arctic ocean environment.
