A Digital Platform for Studies in Learning and Optimization of Learning Systems

Abstract

The Clemson University Real-Time Power and Intelligent Systems Laboratory is requesting $524,700 to purchase a cluster based distributed computing platform for data-driven and computational intensive applications. The objectives of this proposal based on a distributed computing platform are to accelerate research and education in the area of Information, Decision, and Complex Networks. The significance of the proposed work based on a high performance distributed computing platform includes: a) Development of a scalable, decentralized and parallelizable InfoSymbiotic System (a cellular computational network) framework for a large dynamic networked system real-time data analytics; b) New architectures and algorithms for increased use of data, information, knowledge, and understanding technology to improve situational intelligence, decision-making and actionable intelligence of large complex networks and environments; c) The technology for partial to full substitution by computation models to provide virtual realtime dynamic data when physical sensors fail to deliver real-time dynamic data for one or more reasons including malfunction, cyber attacks, communication bandwidth issues, etc. d) Minimal or no large network outages as a result of the presence of situational intelligence to handle asymmetries in real-time operation and actionable control centers/bases. Herein, specifically data-driven computing, analysis and operational challenges, and situational intelligence in power and energy management systems with the use of smart sensors and measurements will be addressed. Demonstration of (a) to (d) above for the smart power and energy system infrastructure will be carried out. The investigator expects to use the digital computing platform to carry out research and educational activities that will contribute to the ONR’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance via new tools for situational intelligence, decision-making and actionable intelligence and others at the Department of Defense programs.
