The Mathematical Design of Materials

Abstract

To develop advanced mathematical theory of materials that is formulated to discover sin- gular materials, materials whose special behavior is found to occur at special compositions defined by special combinations of material parameters. We propose two thrusts: a) to de- velop first principles methods for phase transformations, accounting for compatibility and microstructure, and b) to forge a new approach to nucleation theory that bypasses the generic failure of linear stability analysis in this area. The recent record-setting alloys described be- low are singular materials, the singular behavior is fundamentally related to the nucleation problem. This kind of theory is needed to guide the discovery of singular materials.
