Building International Capacity and Partnerships to Improve Marine Mammal Science: 2019 World Marine Mammal Conference
Abstract
This proposal is for technical support for the 2019 World Marine Mammal Conference, which will be co-hosted by the European Cetacean Society, and held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain from 9-12 December. This is only the second world conference in the history of our" Society (the first was in 1998 in Monaco). The Conference, with its theme ""Together for Science and Conservation"" has already drawn" record numbers of abstract submissions (1,961) from a record 80 countries, and we anticipate between 2,000 and 2,500 attendees. The World Conference is designed to be a truly global meeting of marine mammal scientists, from its plenary sessions to its poster pods. Each plenary, for example, will convene multiple scientists from around the world to discuss shared discipline concepts and challenges. The talks, speed-talks, and posters will be organized around cross-cutting themes, designed for participants to engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue, In addition, there will be over 50 workshops presented over the two days before the World Conference, to enhance the opportunity for in-depth discussion and analyses of topics in marine mammal science. We anticipate that this World Conference will fundamentally and positively impact marine mammal science and conservation for decades to come.
