Task Force Ocean: From Sensing to Decision Aids, a Comprehensive Approach

Abstract

We are proposing research into how information about the ocean environment can be measured and used for navy tactical advantage. We" will take a comprehensive approach that involves improving our environmental knowledge by exploiting submarine Through-The-Sensor (TTS) techniques and then use coupled ocean/acoustic modeling to predict sonar performance. We willinclude an estimate of uncertainty to measure the impact of including in-situ measurements. Many of the tools that could be used to provide uncertainty are currently available but these are not being used to provide better information to decision makers. The cornerstone of the overall research effort is an experiment that will serve to validate both the TTS estimation results and the prediction methods (modeling). An overall goal for the research is to determine how to make the best use of environmental measurements and to improve ocean and acoustic mode"ling to ultimately enhance the performance of sonar tactical decision aids. This will involve both basic and applied research.
