Natural Language Understanding by Intelligent Collaborators

Abstract

Approved for public releaseThis project will focus on enabling intelligent agents to compute the meaning of natural language utterances. Specifically, it will develop two aspects of natural language understanding that are essential for intelligent agents collaborating with people across domains and applications: the ability to extract meaning from inputs that feature linguistic challenges (such as ellipsis, implicature, and indirect speech acts), and the ability to ground the meaning of language inputs in the real world. We will develop and test the agent~s language understanding capabilities usingone robotic application and two simulated ones.
