Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP) for Small Craft

Abstract

Inspired by growing European dominance in electric and hybrid propulsion for boats (Calder, 2016; Spurr, 2010) and homebuilder innovation on display at events like the Electric Boat Association of America~s Wye Island Challenge Electric Boat Marathon (PropTalk, 2017), this white paper extends the education and competition program to promote electric propulsion for small craft in the United States, utilizing the Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC), being heldJuly 15-16, 2020 and in July 2022 at the United States Coast Guard Yard, Baltimore, MD., as the demonstration venue. The remaining PEP budget funds the two GMU teams (one team is designing a hull that all teams can use, while the other team is creating the electric propulsion), senior staff, and ASNE staff to get the 2020 competition season underway. This additional funding is being requested to provide seed funding for additional teams as well as the costs associated with hosting two competitionsthat will bring together collegiate teams of naval engineers with the Navy, Coast Guard, and private industry partners that power the Multi-Agency Craft Conference.
