Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium Midshipman Cyber Research and Training

Abstract

The proposed project aims to collaborate with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) staff at Old Dominion University (ODU) and leverage ODU’s well-established cybersecurity program to expand the cybersecurity skills for students enrolled in the Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium. It will support up to 9 Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium students each year to conduct cybersecurity research under the guidance of both faculty and graduate student mentors. A range of cybersecurity research problems will be formulated and introduced to the participants. Most of them will focus on fundamental security challenges in communication and networking, electronic warfare, and machine learning. The overarching objective of this project is to engage the NROTC student participants in cuttingedge cybersecurity research projects in order to grow their cyber warfare skills and research capacities. The success of the project will assist the Navy in their capability to address the shortfall of cybersecurity talents as revealed in the Cybersecurity Readiness Review released recently by the Secretary of the Navy and enhance the cyber readiness of the future Navy.
