U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program Investment Strategy for Clinical Research FY21-FY25 Scientific Meeting

Abstract

The U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program (MMP) has a unique population of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and maintains system readiness by ensuring the ~highest quality of humane care and treatment~ as specified in SECNAV instruction 3900.41H. To achieve this goal, the MMP prioritizes clinical research that directly improves the ability for MMP to detect, diagnose, treat, and prevent marine mammal illnesses. During FY21-FY25, the MMP has identified the following prioritized list of needs to help prevent disease, improve health care, and maintain animal fitness: (1) Advancement of the prevention, detection, and treatment of infectious diseases; (2) Application of a personalized medical approach to individual animal health care; (3) Characterization, evaluation, and treatment of sensory and nervous system disorders; and (4) Advancement of the prevention, detection, and treatment of high priority diseases of the gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, and respiratory systems. In collaboration with MMP, the National Marine Mammal Foundation proposes a 3-day scientific meeting involving subject matter experts from multiple disciplines. This will be the fourth iteration of this valuable process, allowing MMP staff to interact directly with experts facilitating the exploration of new and advanced techniques that will directly improve the health care of MMP marine mammals. The objective of the meeting is to create a prioritized list of clinical research projects that would address the MMP clinical needs bulleted above. A product of this workshop will be the MMP Investment Strategy for Clinical Research: FY21-25. As in previous years, this document will not only serve as a guide to prioritize MMP clinical research, it will allow for accurate tracking of MMP~s progress and will be used to communicate MMP~s research needs to potential internal and external funders.
