Conference: Dynamics Days 2020

Abstract

Overview and Methods to be Employed:This proposal requests funding for the conference Dynamics Days 2020 which will take place at the Hilton in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, on January 35 of 2020. Dynamics Days is an annual international conference focused on nonlinear dynamics, chaos, and their applications which has been running in the US for 38 years. The funds will be used in their majority to provide travel awards to students without other sources of support. This year Dynamics Dayswill have 15 invited speakers, a similar number of contributed talks, and poster sessions, showcasing work on fluid dynamics, biological systems, dynamics on networks, nonlinear waves, synchronization, and other areas. The participants represent a broad range of disciplines, including physics, mathematics, engineering, and biological sciences.Scientific Objectives:Due to the broad applicability of nonlinear dynamics, fundamental developments in the field often occur in the context of interdisciplinary problems. Dynamics Days has established itself as one of the main venues where new ideas and results are exchanged between the many different fields where nonlinear dynamics finds application. The invited speakers are leaders in their fields, which are a representative cross section of current research in nonlinear dynamics.Broader Impacts:The majority of the funds requested in this proposal will be used to support travel costs of domestic invited speakers and offer travel awards to graduate students and postdocs in order to increase their participation. Students receiving financial support will be able to present their work in contributed talks, in short ignite talks, or in poster sessions. Young researchers will especially benefit from the format of the conference, which is designed to promote scientificinteractions and to provide the attendees with a broad overview of current research areas in nonlinear dynamics. Participants from underrepresented minorities will be especially encouraged to attend the conference. Other funds will be allocated towards logistical costs to ensure a successful conference.
