Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials Workshops

Abstract

This proposal requests funds to provide partial financial support to researchers who are invited to speak at the annual workshops in 2021-2024. The international prestige of this series of workshops and the quality of the research presented depends primarily on its ability to attract the world~s best theorists and experimentalists working in the fields of dielectrics, ferroelectrics, and multiferroics. The Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials Workshop is the foremost scientific meeting dedicated to basic research in ferroelectrics in North America, and has become one of the most influential workshops on active materials in the world. For more than a quarter century this series of annual workshops has brought together the world~s leading researchers from academe, industry, and national laboratories to present and debate the most recent and important discoveries in the areas of ferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, multiferroics, and related materials. The Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics and Related Materials Workshop is typically attended by 85 to 120 participants, including students and postdocs, which allows for an informal setting in which attendees can hear every talk. One of the workshop~s strongest assets is the fact that both theory and experiment are equally represented. This series of workshops has played a significant role in fostering multi-institutional collaborations on research devoted to understanding the fundamental physics of these complex and versatile materials, which are used in countless applications such as medical imaging, data storage, sonar, and energy harvesting. Financial support from ONR will significantly help the organizers to attract leading scientists who would otherwise be unable to attend.
