Digital Manufacturing System for the Creation of Artificially Intelligent Active Protective Materials

Abstract

Digital Manufacturing System for the Creation of Artificially Intelligent Active Protective Materials. Protection against rotational motions requires the independent modulation of the helmet pad materials’ bulk and shear mechanical properties. Using traditional manufacturing processes, it is challenging to independently modulate a polymeric foam material’s bulk and shear properties. We propose to acquire the Stratysys J750, a state-of-the-art 3D printer. Our preliminary research shows that through exploiting the extreme versatility of the Stratysys J750 it is possible to create lattice-type materials in which the bulk and shear moduli can be independently manipulated.
