Code 33 Barnacles and Expertise for Antiffouling, Foul Release and Adhesion Research
Abstract
This proposal directly addresses the first bullet point of the guidance: marine relevant laboratory testing that can help coatings developers answer basic research hypotheses about easy release and non-toxic deterrent strategies; as well as the second part of bullet two: develop and interpret relevant assays that provide scientific feedback to coatings developers, biofouling researchers and Navy scientists and engineers. Our role(s) in this component of the program is supportive of other biological test facilities in providing barnacles and other model systems, to coatings researchers in helping them overcome initial issues enabling them to prepare for in-water tests as well as thinking about how to test for mechanisms of action and toxicity and for basic researchers in custom designing methods to answer their specific research questions. We thrive in cross-cultural and collaborative environments.
