Project Ocean: K-12 Teacher Professional Development in Physical Oceanography

Abstract

Funds are provided for the Project Ocean course thenext generation of the Maury Project, to conduct three workshops to expand a national cadre of Project Ocean peer trainers who actively promote the teaching of oceanographic topics at the precollege level. The Project Ocean course will provide a core group of teachers with the knowledge and instructional resources to enable them, in turn, to train a large number of their peers on selected oceanography topics. By increasing the scientific knowledge of teachers, Project Ocean is ultimately directed toward attracting precollege students, including underrepresented minorities, to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) studies. The American Meteorological Society (AMS), in partnership with the United States Naval Academy (USNA), California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U), and Washington College, will conduct the workshops. Project Ocean participants completing all course requirements, including one-week workshopattendance, supporting online coursework, and the conduct of peer-training workshops, will earn three graduate-level credits through California University of Pennsylvania.
