ESOMM Meeting 2020: The Effects of Sound on Marine Mammals
Abstract
ONR is requested to help support the organization and conduct of the 7th Effects of Sound in the Ocean on Marine Mammals (ESOMM-2020) which will be held on 3-6 November 2020 in Beaufort, North Carolina, USA. This long-running meeting, originally organized through North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), has brought together researchers, program managers, and regulators considering the impacts of Navy sonar and other ocean noise on marine mammals in previous meetings over nearly two decades. All previous meetings have occurred in Europe, but this 7th meeting will occur for the first time in the United States. This will offer the chance for many more U.S. Navy and other federal government representatitives and U.S. scientists to attend this event than in previous occurrences. Southall Environmental Associates (SEA) is collaborating with colleagues from the Duke University Marine Laboratory (DUML) to plan, organize, and execute the meeting. ESOMM-2020 will continue to build on the tradition of presentations and discussions of research, monitoring, new field and analytical methods of measuring and understanding how noise from different sound sources may affect marine mammals, as well as most effectively managing these issues. The ESOMM meetings have and will continue to provide a platform to communicate recent scientific results and practical challenges in science along with addressing the needs from policy and regulator perspectives. Senior marine mammal experts from SEA and DUML will serve as co-chairs in leading the planning and execution of the meeting, supported by organizational support staff. Co-chairs will coordinate with a steering committee, including representatives of the ONR marine mammal program and other U.S. Navy representatives, in planning the meeting, developing the technical agenda, and chairing technical sessions and discussion sessions. An abstract book will be made available to participants at ESOMM-2020 and presentations will be distributed to all meeting participants following the meeting. A final meeting report will also be developed and distributed.
