Support of Student Travel and Awards for Electrochemical Society Meeting
Abstract
ABSTRACT: The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is seeking $10,000 of support from the Office of Naval Research forstudent/post doctoral research prizes and travel grants at the 20th Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells &Electrolyzers 20(PEFC&E-20) symposium at the 238th Meeting of the ECS on October 4-9, 2020 in Honolulu,HI. $10,000 of support will qualify ONR as a Gold Sponsor of the conference. This international symposium is devoted to all aspects of research, development, and engineering ofpolymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) and electrolysis systems. The intention is to bring together theinternational community working on the subject and to enable effective interactions between researchand engineering communities. The symposium has six different sections covering (a)Diagnostics/Characterization Methods, Membrane Electrode Design, (b) Cells, Stacks and Systems, (c)Cation-Exchange Membrane Performance & Durability, (d) Catalysts for Acidic Fuel Cells, (e) Materials forAlkaline Fuel Cells, and (f) Polymer-Electrolyte Electrolysis. We anticipate that approximately 450 talkswill be submitted to the PEFC&E20 symposium. The session includes one day of plenary talks, 4 days of 6concurrent technical sessions with a mixture of invited and contributed talks, plus 2 nights of posterpresentations. The description of the student/post doc research prizes and travel grants is as follows:In order to encourage active participation of new and talented researchers in the field, the ECS will awardStudent/Postdoc Travel Grants of at least $700 towards travel and registration in support of outstandinggraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Travel awards are made to encourage maximal participationof students and postdoctoral fellows. To be considered for the award, an abstract for an oral or posterpresentation as well as a manuscript for the symposium proceedings must be submitted by the respectivedeadlines. Student Poster Prizes of a total of $3000 will be awarded with a $1500 top prize. All recipientsof travel awards will be asked to acknowledge ONR in their presentation or poster. The intended distribution of the $10,000 in funding is as follows:$1600 toward poster awards12 awards for student travel of approximately $700/eachIn years past, we have used the funds to support the travel for students and postdoctoral fellows fromEurope and North America, and poster prizes have been awarded to students from Asia, North Americaand Europe. Travel awardees are requested to acknowledge support from ONR in their presentations. The symposium will not be supported by foreign countries or private companies. We appreciate your continued support of this important symposium. As you know, encouraging scientificcareers is critical for the technical leadership of the United States, and a technical prize and/or travelaward to a student can be critical to his or her future success. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.
