Start-up Funds for a Material Science Faculty at Clark Atlanta University
Abstract
Clark Atlanta University (CAU) seeks support from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Navy HBCU/MI Start-up Program in Materials to supplement the universitys start-up package to be provided to a new faculty hire in chemistry focusing in materials science research and education. While CAU does not have a formal program in materials science, most of its chemistry and physics faculty and students are actively engaged in materials research in: 1) High performance polymers and composites; 2. Energy storage; or 3. Computer-Aided Materials Design (CAMD). These research areas align with key research and development that DoD and the Navy have identified as core technologies to support our Warfighters. In line with CAUs 2018 - 2023 strategic plan, the departments of chemistry and physics are developing new course offerings in materials science that will allow the development and implementation of undergraduate and graduate concentrations in materials science. To this end we hired a new chemistry faculty member in CAMD in fall 2019 and are planning over the next three years to hire two additional faculty members in chemistry, one in high performance polymers or composites, and one in materials for energy storage to complement our current chemistry and physics faculty members. CAU has committed $120,000 over the first two years of the new chemistry faculty members appointment for his or her start-up package including a reduced teaching load. The addition of $ 200,000 from ONR would enable CAU to attract and hire a well trained chemist in materials science and allow him or her to build a first class laboratory to conduct their research and develop their independent research and education career. CAU will also provide state of the art lab space and access in instrumentation in the Cole Research Center for Science and Technology and provide a senior faculty member to mentor the new faculty member to further support his or her research initiation and proposal development. The new faculty hire will be tasked to develop a strong research program in materials science and to support the development of new interdisciplinary courses in materials science. With this new faculty members support, CAU will enhance our long history of training scientist that are predominately African American and conducting research in materials science that supports DoD and Navy technology needs. It will also enhance CAUs contribution to the production of a diverse materials science workforce and conduct R & D in materials science that supports our national needs.
