Rapid-Tuning Laser Systems for Spectrally-Resolved Diagnostics of High-Enthalpy Flows

Abstract

The proposed equipment funding will have an immediate impact on the pace of high-speed flow research and will also serve to maintain Stanfords and the United States leadership position in developing advanced diagnostic strategies. The availability of these advanced diagnostic approaches and their application in various high-speed flow facilities such as shock tubes, shock tunnels and arcjets, will permit DoD scientists and engineers to better understand complex phenomena in hypersonic aerodynamics and heat transfer, and apply this knowledge to the improved thermal protection system design and operation of next-generation high-speed vehicles. Moreover, the proliferation of these newdiagnostic approaches to other world-class laboratories, as demonstrated through the adoption of numerous previous Hanson Research Group innovations, will deliver a strong return on the investment of Office of Naval Research resources.
