R/V Atlantis Mid-Life Refit Scientific Systems
Abstract
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) proposes the acquisition, installation and operation of a series of scientific systems in support of the mid-life re-fit of the Global Class research vessel Atlantis (AGOR-25). Installation of these systems and components will be part of the planned mid-life refit shipyard period scheduled for 2020. This science infrastructure is critical to maintaining a competitive research fleet both in the collection of higher resolution scientific data, but also as a platform to teach the latest technological tools to the next generation of researchers. As critical as Atlantis is in the collection of critical data related to important subjects like climate change, ocean biodiversity, and national defense initiatives, it is important to note that every expedition undertaken by Atlantis is staffed not only be senior ranking scientists, but typically by an even larger number of students ranging from undergraduates to those seeking advanced graduate degrees.
