MONITORING THE CONTENT AND MEASURING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION AND PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGNS IN SELECTED FORMER SOVIET UNION STATES
Abstract
The proposed project will be focused on the examination of the content, techniques, and effectiveness of Russian state-sponsored propaganda and disinformation targeting Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan. Thus, the project will have two main objectives that will be achieved in two stages of the project. ~ Objective 1 (Stage One): To monitor the content of Russian propaganda in traditional and social media platforms.~ Objective 2 (Stage Two): To measure the effectiveness and impact of Russian propaganda. The budget for this objective will be submitted in the first quarter of the project. To achieve these objectives, we will utilize both qualitative and quantitative research methods, combining content analysis of the Russian propaganda disseminated through multiple social and mass media sources targeting Russian speakers in the selected countries with measuring its effectiveness in shaping attitudes by conducting focus groups and surveys of Russian speakers in those countries. To gather data, UT PI team will establish a Social Media team at UT and will contract with two well-established research centers based in Vilnius, Lithuania (Baltic Surveys and Independent Institute for Socio-Economic and Political Studies) to conduct data gathering in the selected countries.
