Game-based Literary Assessment

Abstract

assessments of reading and writing skills. In the proposed research, the investigators leverage artificial intelligence to investigate a novel approach to authentic literacy assessment that leverages affordances and innovations related to constructed response tasks (e.g., explanations, summaries, questions), natural language processing, and stealth assessment in game-based settings. The overarching goal of this project is to develop an automated, stealth, game-based literacy assessment in the context of the immersive, narrative game, Navy Life. This project includes three objectives working toward that goal. Objective One (Years 1 and 2) is to develop machine learning algorithms that predict literacy skills (i.e., reading and writing scores from validated standardized tests)Objective Two (Years 1-3) is to iteratively refine game-based stealth assessments of literacy skills. Objective Three (Years 1-3) is to develop narrative game scenarios and stealth literacy assessments within the context of Navy Life.
