Naval STEM Program at Cal State LA
Abstract
The proposal outlines a plan to deepen and broaden the existing Cal State LA Naval STEM Program with new and innovative ideas that will increase the pipeline of high quality STEM graduates who enter the Navys Southern California System Commands (SYSCOMs) workforce equipped with relevant naval knowledge and skills. The program focuses on providing underserved and underrepresented student populations (including Hispanic minorities, women, and military-connected students) at Cal State LA access without barriers to STEM educationopportunities and a pathway to careers in Naval STEM. The SYSCOMs benefit by improving the quality, quantity, and diversification of its future STEM workforce in order to sustain its technological superiority across its missions. The premise of the program is that repeated exposure to and engagement in organized naval relevant activities throughout a students undergraduate education (freshmen through senior year) will inspire them to pursue careers with the Navy SYSCOMs upon graduation. The new activities include a hands-on summer programfor High School girls; a program to help Cal State LAs military-connected students with their degree pathway and opportunities in Naval STEM; enhancements to Cal State LAs AUV student organization; and new curriculum in Artificial Intelligence and Date Science. These activities have been planned in collaboration with our local SYSCOMs: NAVSEA-Corona andPort Hueneme; NAVFAC-Port Hueneme; NIWC-Pacific; and NAVAIR-China Lake and Point Mugu.
