Simulation of the flow over a prolate spheroid

Abstract

Simulation of the flow over a prolate spheroidWe propose to (i) develop the capability for wall-modeled large eddy simulation (WMLES) of theprolate spheroid under the same conditions as planned experiments, and (ii) use DNS and LES tostudy boundary layer transition induced by tripping especially at angle of attack. Goal (i) aims todevelop the LES capability for high-Reynolds number flows of naval interest. Goal (ii) is motivatedby the challenges in tripping the boundary layer, especially at angle of attack. Another objectiveis to develop transition modeling in the wall-modeling context. The proposed work will use ahigh-fidelity simulation methodology for DNS, LES and global stability analysis developed forcomplex flows at the University of Minnesota.
