Virtually Co-located Augmented Reality Spaces For Visualization,Training, and Navigation
Abstract
Virtually Co-located Augmented Reality Spaces For Visualization,Training, and NavigationTechnical advances for augmented reality have made significant progress, making it a promisingtechnology for military training and potentially even deployment in the field. Two hurdles standingin the way of this are that it is difficult to use augmented reality technology collaboratively, and thetechnology is difficult to use outdoors. Many important tasks are done collaboratively, as teams orgroups. Related to this, these groups are often located in different geographic locations. Currentstate-of-the-art technology compounds the problem when users are distributed remotely, particularlywhen tasks involve navigation, visualization, interaction, and training. Likewise, currentstate-of-the-art commodity-level technology, which can be widely deployed, is simply not capableof luminance levels that are suitable for outdoor use in general conditions. In this DURIP proposal, we acquire and build a system that will enable groups to use augmentedreality to interact collaboratively from remote locations. This system will enhance or enableresearch into the specific problems mentioned previously, that of collaborative navigation, interaction, visualization, and training. Our system will also be capable of simulating outdoor augmentedreality in virtual reality, allowing us to explore the constraints and limits of the technology as itbecomes better in such situations. Our system will support multiple users locally, and will alsosupport users distributed by large geographic distances, allowing us to test a truly distributed environmentat the scale of tens of total users and six distributed groups. These capabilities, beingavailable to teams of people that are not geographically located in one place, will make learning andtraining possibilities arise that would be expensive, impractical, or impossible to achieve otherwise.
