Nav-R Cybersecurity Internship Program
Abstract
Currently ROTC programs have little or no training in cybersecurity, which has become a battlefield in its own rite. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Center for Cybersecurity Research and Education (CCRE) proposes to create a two-year cybersecurity certificate program for multi-service ROTC. UAH CCRE will partner with Historically Black College (HBC) Alabama A&M University Army ROTC program and HBC Tuskegee University Navy ROTC program. While in the two-year program the midshipmen and cadets will take a series of Cybersecurity fundamental and advanced level classes, tests and exercises. Additionally, in year 1 of the program, ROTC students will participate in a one-year internship in the CCRE Cyber Force Incubator (CFI) where they will receive hands-on experience in researching current cyber threats and applying their skills to protect against threats. In year 2, students will be matched withan employer in the Federal Government, Defense Contractor or Intelligence agency for a yearlong internship to gain additional experience and training. The certificates, coursework and internships are described in the following proposal and are designed to equip cadets and midshipmen with the skills to recognize and combat the intrusion of cyber attacks on various military systems. Throughout this program the UAH CCRE will collaborate with the NavalResearch Laboratory (NRL). UAH CCRE is:- Certified by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of HomelandSecurity (DHS) as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE/CDE),- Certified as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research(CAE-R),- Certified as an Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence (IC CAE).
