Research Advances in MeteorologyHoning Operational Readiness for Naval Superiority (RAM-HORNS)

Abstract

This proposal outlines a scope of research at the basic to applied research level (i.e., spanning 6.1 to 6.4 equivalent) in support of the Office of Naval Research (ONR). The research will be performed by a team comprised of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) and the Department of Atmospheric Science (ATS) at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, CO, and a sub-contractor based at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. The research leverages a strong historical linkage between CSU and the Navy, including 40 years of experience in applied research pertaining to meteorological satellite applications, familiarity with operational user needs, and development of mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) representing the state-of-the-art among U.S.-based models.
