SSEC Satellite and Field Experiment Support for ONR

Abstract

Here we propose a three-year effort including satellite algorithm and software development combined with the Space Science and Engineering (SSEC) High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) measurement capabilities in support of ONR research efforts. This work builds on our current ONR supported research which includes the development of cyclone retrievals, a new geo-stationary aerosol retrieval that is integrated into the NOAA Clouds from AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) processing system providing a combined cloud and aerosol processing package designed for near real time applications. Building on these efforts, we propose to develop new cloud and aerosol typing algorithms using advance machine learning techniques designed to leverage the spatial and temporal information in next generation geo-stationary observations. Finally, we will continue to support ONR with our expertise with HSRL observations and instrument development including future deployments of our HSRL systems.
