2021 Science of Adhesion Gordon Research Conference & Seminar

Abstract

2021 Science of Adhesion Gordon Research Conference & SeminarThe Science of Adhesion Gordon Research Conference brings together a community with expertise and interests in interfacial and surface phenomena, with an emphasis on the relation between interfacial structure, chemistry, and mechanical properties of adhesives. This GRC has been continually replenished by a combination of maintaining itself as the primary home for advances in the fundamental science of adhesion, and actively making connections to new areas of science where surface and interfacial phenomena, primarily adhesion but also friction and wetting, are a core concern. The 2021 Science of Adhesion GRC/GRS will focus on the deterministic control of adhesion across length scales, including fundamentals and applications. The conference will focus on deterministic adhesion control, which includes the static and dynamic control of adhesion via chemistry, mechanics, and stimuli such as electric fields, temperature, and light. The Conference will include speakers that are investigating the fundamental chemistry, physics, and biology of adhesion as well speakers that are pursing basic research to develop new materials and surfaces with controlled and switchable adhesion. The sessions will cover multiple topics that span the topic of deterministic adhesion control, including geometric control, tuning of interfaces in composite materials, electroadhesion, mechanochemistry, anti-fouling and anti-icing surfaces, adhesion in implantable systems, and responsive interfaces. Speakers will be invited to ensure theory, computation, experiment, and application are balanced in the technical program. The topic of this conference is of direct relevance to ONR as multiple applications of deterministic control of adhesion have the potential to impact both naval systems and the warfighter. The 2021 Science of Adhesion GRC/GRS aims to provide a forum for cutting-edge presentations and vibrant discussion and debate about new and developing problems in Adhesion Science. The conference will primarily focus on Deterministic control of adhesion across length scales: fundamentals to applications. Moreover, it will bring established strengths of the Adhesion Science community to bear on newer fields and problems. It is GRCs goal to invite a mix of young and more experienced speakers who will present the most recent and exciting research and to achieve this goal with balanced or diverse representation among speakers and discussion leaders. We will organize an accompanying GRS which will encourage and enhance active participation of graduate students and post-doctoral associates in the main GRC. The GRS will also provide a unique mentoring opportunity. Approved for Public Release
